- Plant outdoors in full sun and rich, well-drained soil after all danger of frost. Cowpeas germinate best at a soil temperature of 65°F or warmer. Water frequently at soil level.
- Harvest pods while still young and tender. For fresh shelled peas, harvest when pods begin to change color and seeds are plump.

An essential hot weather vegetable. Produces well even when it is too hot and humid for snap beans. Pods are held on a short vine and mature about the same time as okra. May be eaten whole when young or shelled for their seeds when mature.
