Schefflera Care
Schefflera, commonly called Umbrella Plant, is a popular houseplant known for its glossy, umbrella-shaped leaf clusters.
Easy to grow and resilient, it adapts well to most indoor environments. With proper light and consistent watering, it develops into a lush, attractive plant for homes or offices.
Light
Prefers bright, indirect light. Tolerates medium light; growth may slow. Avoid harsh direct sunlight—it can scorch leaves.
Watering
Water when the top 1–2" of soil are dry. Allow excess water to drain fully. Reduce watering in winter
Humidity
Prefers moderate humidity. Adapts well to average household conditions. Occasional misting helps in very dry air
Temperature
Ideal range: 65–80°F (18–27°C). Protect from cold drafts below 55°F.
Soil
Use a well-draining, all-purpose potting mix. Add perlite to improve drainage.
Fertilizing
Feed every 4–6 weeks in spring and summer. Use a balanced, diluted liquid fertilizer. No feeding needed in fall or winter.
Repotting
Repot every 2–3 years or when rootbound. Spring is the best time to repot.
Pruning & Cleaning
Prune leggy growth to maintain shape. Wipe leaves regularly to remove dust and improve shine.
Pet Safety
Toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. Can cause vomiting, drooling, and mouth irritation.
Common Problems
Leaf drop = sudden temperature changes or overwatering. Yellow leaves = poor drainage or excess water. Leggy growth = insufficient light.
Common Pests
Watch out for mealybugs, spider mites, and scale.
Fun Fact
Schefflera gets its nickname “Umbrella Plant” from its leaflets, which radiate outward like the spokes of an umbrella.
