March Lawn & Yard Checklist: Achieve a Beautiful Lawn!

Lawn & Yard March Checklist

March is the perfect time to wake up your lawn and yard from its winter slumber! As the temperatures rise and daylight hours increase, your grass begins to emerge from dormancy, making it the ideal time to give it a healthy head start. A well-maintained lawn not only boosts curb appeal but also provides a welcoming outdoor space for family gatherings, relaxation, and gardening. With the right steps, you can set the stage for lush, green grass and a vibrant outdoor space all season long. Follow this checklist from Alsip Home & Nursery to achieve a beautiful lawn and give your yard the spring refresh it deserves, ensuring strong, healthy growth for months to come.

đź’ˇ Did you know

Did you know that aerating your lawn in early spring not only helps grass grow thicker but also encourages beneficial microorganisms to thrive in the soil? These microbes break down organic matter, improving soil health and naturally reducing thatch buildup!

Step 1: Test Your Soil pH

Healthy grass starts with healthy soil. Before applying any treatments, test your soil’s pH. Ideally, your lawn should have a pH between 6.0 and 7.0. If your soil is too acidic, adding lime can help. If it’s too alkaline, sulfur or organic materials like compost may be needed.

Step 2: Aerate the Soil

Compacted soil prevents water, oxygen, and nutrients from reaching the roots. If your lawn experiences heavy foot traffic or feels dense, aerate the soil in early spring. This process creates small holes in the ground, allowing air and moisture to penetrate deeply.

Step 3: Remove Debris & Rake Thatch

Winter leaves behind debris such as sticks, leaves, and dead grass that can suffocate your lawn. Rake up any leftover thatch (a thick layer of organic material that sits on top of the soil) to encourage healthy growth. Removing debris also improves airflow and prevents fungal issues.

Step 4: Apply Crabgrass Preventer & Fertilizer

March is the time to get ahead of weeds! Apply a pre-emergent herbicide to stop crabgrass before it takes hold. Pair this with a slow-release fertilizer to give your lawn the nutrients it needs to green up and grow strong. Just be mindful—not all pre-emergent herbicides allow for overseeding, so plan accordingly.

Step 5: Overseed Thin Areas

If your lawn has thin or patchy spots, overseeding in early spring can help fill them in before weeds have a chance to take over. Choose a high-quality grass seed blend suited to your region and keep the area moist until the new grass is established.

Step 6: Repair Bare Spots

Bare patches can quickly become a breeding ground for weeds. Use a quality patch repair mix that includes grass seed, mulch, and fertilizer to encourage new growth. Keep the area consistently moist for optimal germination.

Step 7: Maintain Moisture

Early spring can be unpredictable, with fluctuating temperatures and rainfall. Keep an eye on soil moisture and water your lawn as needed, especially if conditions are dry. A good rule of thumb is to provide about an inch of water per week.

Step 8: Monitor for Weeds & Pests

As temperatures rise, so do weed and pest populations. Keep an eye out for early signs of trouble. Treat weeds before they become established, and inspect your lawn for pests like grubs that can damage grass roots.
